Deleuze and Guattari’s concept of the rhizome is the opposite to what is called tree thinking – the idea that there is central stem or root ‘which plots a point, fixes an order.’ (Deleuze and Guattari. A Thousand Plateaus. pg 5) There is structure, like an orchestra. The rhizome is heterogeneous, it can extend in all directions with any part becoming inter-connected to anything else at any point. An improvisation group is a good example of a rhizome – idea’s bounce off each member of the group, they expand in all and any direction.
This is a really good article explaining how digital music is becoming more rhizomatic.
